My Mini-Bible Study for 2019 | Read the Bible in a Year
Using The NRSV Daily Bible

Today’s Reading
1/1/2019 Day 1 Genesis 1:1 - 3:24

Reflection
We begin our reading the Bible in a year at the beginning.  Our
reading will take us through about 3 chapters a day, a verse to
meditate upon, a reflection from one of the church greats, and a
closing prayer. When I study I always have a composition book
near me so that I write down what strikes me about the text.

Hint: Read in your study bible or the internet on how the Hebrew
Bible was formed.

Genesis is the first of five books commonly known as the Pentateuch.
As you read you will see different stories and ways of describing the
situation. Here in the beginning we have two different Creation stories,
How humanity fell or sinned, childbirth, and more.

The first story of Creation was probably written by what the Priestly writer.

Hint: Must Read - this will tell you about the Documentary Hypothesis .
In this first story - God is the cosmic creator going through each of the
Creation from creating the universe to humanity. God establishes the
Sabbath day of rest.

In the second story - God is a gardener creating Eden and all things
growing and living. Creates male and female in God’s image. Humanity
has only one restriction and that is eating from the tree of knowledge -
They do, blame each other (not themselves) and are evicted from Eden
(paradise). J source.

Meditation:
What does it mean for humanity to be created in the image of God but
not God?

Prayer:
O God, you revealed in your Word and in your work in me. Help
me not confuse “that-which-is- God” from “that-which-is-not-God.”
Help me to consider my likeness to you as a constant invitation
to know you better. Amen

for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn,

fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given
us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
