What is your discipleship?

Welcome, Worship, Study, Serve plus Witness and Stewardship MARCH 9, 2015  /  DANIEL P. RICHARDS A Model for the Christian life both individual and communal. Over the last decade I have struggled with how to teach a model of the Christian life that is useful both for catechesis and for community life.  I have struggled too with a national church church that simply seems to be more interested in being a cultural lobby than being a support for the disciples on the ground of faith.  We produce far better statements on social issues than on theologically meaningful materials for our parishioners. And yes, I mean parishioners.  We serve a parish, but we are a congregation.  We say almost nothing to the world outside our doors as a church institution, but maybe in an age of personality it is a better witness to be silent and let our character speak for itself.  My fear is that we are ashamed of our character and fear who may speak for our...

Day 32 - Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

Image
Read |  Day 32 | Sunday | February 1 | Exodus 1:1 - 2:25; 1 Chronicles 6:1-3a; Exodus 3:1 - 4:17 Dates | Exodus occurred about 300 years after Joseph's death | 1526 BCE or 1360 BCE Background on Exodus |  Complete Jewish Bible with Rashi Commentary - Click here Center for Biblical Studies - Exodus - Click here Like Genesis, Exodus is quite lengthy, and so it might help to break it up into sections. In fact, it is simplest to think of Exodus as a two-part book. Chapters 1-15 describe Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery under Moses. Chapters 16-40 describe the journey to Mt. Sinai and what happens there: the giving of the law and the building of Israel’s portable worship tent, the tabernacle. As we can see, more than half the book takes place at Mt. Sinai. In terms of the broader narrative of Israel’s history (as given in the Pentateuch), Israel will not leave Mt. Sinai until the fourth book of the Pentateuch, Numbers 10. Most of the action in the Pentateuch takes...

The Bible in Time - Overview

Happy New Year!  Blessed New Year! We, at Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington Ave, Traverse City, Michigan, USA continue our effort to give people worldwide the gift of the Bible by a discipline of daily reading and prayer.  Daily prayers will be based on the wonderful and enduring Book of Common Prayer, its Morning Daily Office, with prayers and selection each day from the Daily Office Calendar. (Imagine a denomination asking its adherents to pray and read Scriptures daily.)  These reflections will be posted on two blogs and discussed weekly at a reflection session on Sunday mornings at Grace. The purpose of this venture is to give disciples the basic knowledge of Scripture, create a discipline of daily prayer and reading, and with the leading of the Holy Spirit move out into the congregation, parish, and world in Worship, Welcome, Study, and Service as God’s own disciple in Christ. In 2015, at our reflection sessions held each Sunday will be based on two...
