Day 4 - Noah’s Family

Prayer:

Creator God,

In the coming year …

Let us not hate anyone.

Let us give food to the hungry.

Let us give some of our clothes to the naked.

Let us give generously to charities and others' needs.

Let us seek advice from wise people.

Let us use the advice given to us.

Let us seek the blessings of You.

Let us help give understanding to all.

Let us give kindness to all we see.

Let us pray always for wisdom to do right.
Let us have faith in You always.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen

Based on readings from Tobit 4:15-21

Background:

According to David Carr (NOAB5), like a lot of ancient people, national groups were named in kinship (or by family) terms. Note the map showing how Noah’s sons settled in the land of the Western Mediterranean following the Flood.

The story of the Tower of Babel answers a child’s question of why people have different languages. In this tale, God (“Let us”) confounds the unified language of people so that everyone in different tribes/families speaks differently.

There is unity and thereby power as all the people unite in one voice. God does not want humanity to have “too” much power at this time.

The genealogies in chapters 10 and 11 drive us to one person. In Genesis 11:27, “Terah was the father of Abram, …”. Chapter 11:29,”...Abram’s wife was Sarai”. Terah took his extended family to the land of Ur and settled Haren. The Patriarchs of the faith are coming …

Reflections:

At any specific point in time in human history, God puts people in the right place to do God’s gracious will for God’s people.

Question of the Day:

What is God having you do at this specific point in time to advance God’s will of love and forgiveness?

Tomorrow Readings:

Genesis 12:1 - 14:24
