10/17/2019     Day 290 John 7:10 - 8:58

Reflection |
Today -
Chapter 6 - Jesus has massive crowds following him for
the miracles and healings he has performed. He tells the
crowd not to seek the things of this earth but rather the
things of the Spirit and heaven. Jesus says he is the bread
of life but they only see him as the kid from Nazareth not
the one who comes from heaven. The crowd misses the
point on who he is. He talks of eating his body and drinking
His blood and people think it is being cannibalistic and not
the higher eucharistic message. But after hearing that many
disciples abandon Jesus. He asks the apostles what about you?
Peter - Where would we go? You have the words of
eternal life.
Chapter 7 - Jesus takes a pass on the Feast of Booths
because of the assassination plot against him but sneaks
into anyway. He begins teaching to the crowd and they
are amazed and the religious leaders seek to arrest him
because the crowd wonders if Jesus is the Messiah?

Jesus declares himself to be rivers of living water and
the crowd does not know what to do with him and he
is not arrested at this time. Is he a prophet? Messiah?
Chapter 8 - a woman is caught in adultery (aside - what
about the guy … was not he caught in the same act??)
Jesus - Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
And no one does. Jesus in grace declares to the woman
to go and sin no more.
Jesus says a series of teachings which the pre-resurrection
people do not understand…
  • I am the Light of the World
  • I am going away
  • The truth will set you free
  • I speak of things of my Father
  • Before Abraham I was or I am
  • You don’t know where I have come from...

More Gospel of John by Mark Powell
Because John is so different from the other gospel,
there is much debate among scholars about the how
of the writing of John.
Some say it was written between 90 - 140 c.e. Others
toward the end of the century of the 100s.
Some say it was written by John the Elder and others
say it was a document written by a community over a
period of time - 50 - 100 years.

The community of the beloved disciples seems to have
been followers of Jesus, separated from the world, and
looking continually to a Jesus of the cosmos that came
down from heaven and now rules the universe.
Clement of Alexander said that John wrote a spiritual
Gospel.
The gospel of John is different.  Look at how Jesus is
described differently from the other gospels.
