The Way of Love - Practices for Jesus-Centered Life

The Way of Love - Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life

The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Baptist, Portland, Oregon, is nestled in the woods of the Oregon Episcopal School. The parish serves as a worshipping community boldly grounded in growing faith and service for all ages. During the academic year, the Parish sponsors adult forums in a wide variety of topics of current concerns for Christians in our time.

Katheryn and I (The Rev. Katheryn M. King and Dave Eitland) were asked to introduce the new initiative of the Episcopal Church on spirituality in daily life. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at the General Convention “rolled out” the Way of Love as an invitation for believers to develop daily practices to deepen faith.

Here are some of the resources we referred to in forums conducted on Sundays, September 9 & 23, 2018. These are in no particular order and are not an exhaustive list.

Bishop Curry does a brief introduction of these practices in an introductory video.

“Those who sing praises to God pray twice.”

Worship
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. – Luke 24:30-31
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.  – Book of Common Prayer, 361

Worship is the very core of spirituality where we share with others in the faith the Word, the Eucharist, and the path of the parish. In Oregon nearly 42% of the population do not profess a religion. In some surveys church attendance is considered regular attending only twice per month.

How will you invite a friend to worship with you and show them how it is done?

Bless
“Freely you have received; freely give.” – Matthew 10:8
Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?
People: We will, with God’s help. – Book of Common Prayer, 305
Jesus called his disciples to give, forgive, teach, and heal in his name.
Go
Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” – John 20:21
Send them into the world in witness to your love. – Book of Common Prayer, 306
What is God calling you to do?

Rest
Sleep, naps, recreation, renewal - it is a part of creation
